This software railroad atlas allows you to see the entire North American rail system and zoom in to specific lines and stations. Mouse over or click on a track segment and you'll find owner, traffic density, type of signal and more. This latest version is updated with data from the U.S. DOT and FRA. Calculate route mileage. Create routes using line segments for maximum flexibility.
All US, Canadian and Mexican railroads shown, from the biggest operator to the smallest short line - even abandoned lines. Over 1200 current and past railroads listed. Screen shots can be printed.
Locate over 11,000 stations by name, junction code, Zip Code or SPLC code. Link to Aerial Photos and Topographic Maps Online - The program links to satellite images or topo map via your web browser of the area currently being viewed. Optional inset map shows greater detail in the U.S.A. based on USGS 1:100,000 maps.
Operating System must be Microsoft Windows 98/NT/2000/XP/Vista or higher (English). Hard drive space required is about 41 Megabytes. Memory Required is at least 32 Meg, with 64 Meg or higher recommended.

Usuable but has drawback
On the plus side it is fairly easy to use.
There are definate problems. If all railroads are displayed, the program will show abandoned routes using dashed lines and active routes using solid lines. If a specific railroad is selected, it shows all routes which had belonged to that railroad using the same solid color with no easy way to distinguish active from abandoned lines. It is possible to learn if a specific segment has been abandoned by moving the cursor over it and looking at the info box.
There is another feature it lacks. It is possible to display multiple railroads on the screen using different colors. Unfortunately, there is no way to create a map containing the routes of a former railroad which are now being operated another railroad. For example, I would like to see which lines of Penn Central are part of the Norfolk Southern system.
The biggest drawback is that there appear to be many errors in the railroad data. For example, in the Dallas Fort Worth area I found three segments which have been abandoned at least 20 years listed as active, and the program also showed the incorrect previous owner for another segment. I have never found any mistakes in SPV's Texas railroad Atlas, which I also own. It's a shame SPV only produces railroad atlases in printed form.
