I've used Panda antivirus software for years and installed it for my friends and clients. As a web designer, I want something to work well yet be unobtrusive. Norton and McAffee get their "code" into everything and it is hard to delete. Zone Alarm did just that everything was an alarm even after telling it not to. Panda works and is easy to install. You do have to delete your previous version of Panda using their uninstall and not Windows uninstall before putting in your new version. Also with the new Global Security 2011 you have to buy a 3 user license instead of a single but now days a lot of people have more than one computer. There are 3 in my household. It is well worth the investment.

Last December I installed the 2010 version of this software and have been happy with it for my parents' computer...on their older Windows XP Professional computer, it's been reliable and unobtrusive, and easy to configure.
Unobtrusive, that is, until it started reminding them to renew their annual subscription to the software. The problem is that the renewal price is pretty high...higher, in fact, than just buying the 2011 version. So, I figured I would get them the 2011 version and install it over the 2010 version. After all, the 2011 version advertises its new features, including increased speed.
So, I sit down with my coffee, ready to start the installation process. A message comes up saying there is no need to install! Just enter the new 2011 license key, and it will extend the 2010 license for another year. In other words, apparently the 2011 version offers nothing new over the 2010 version if you've been keeping the 2010 version up to date. I'm not even two sips into my coffee, and I'm finished "installing".
I like the software. What bugs me is McAfee trying to trick current users into paying too much to renew their software subscription electronically, when the customer could simply order the boxed 2011 version which really amounts to the same update, but at a lower cost.

McAfee Internet Security (MIS 2011)
I tried (McAfee Internet Security) MIS2011 after a long time (It has been ~6 years since I used MaAfee for virus protection) on my WinXP laptop (5 yrs old). MIS2011 is a comprehensive security suite. Its performance (virus detection and internet security) is comparable to Norton. MIS does have room for improvement in a number of areas (esp. resource usage), but still is a decent piece of software.
1. Installation: Installation can be customized from the menu(e.g. deselect spam control, parental control or firewall). Thankfully, installation does not require a restart of your computer, but it does take a while compared to other security software. On my 5yr old laptop, it took ~10 min compared to NIS which took less than 2 min.
2. Performance: MIS also has automatic updates, but installation of signature updates consumes resources even when running in the background. I was able to do minimal tasks such as typing, but browsing got significantly slow during the installation of updates. I haven't had any attacks. So it seems working fine. A system scan didn't reveal threats other than cookies.
3. Internet security: Upon a Google search, the results are marked safe or not with a green tick mark. However, sometimes it just does not show up. In addition, a 'status bar' icon indicates site safety.
MIS automatically detected components of my network (other PCs, router, NAS etc). Everytime I connect to a new wireless network it will pop-up a message and ask me if I want to assign it to a trusted network (e.g. home, work).
Several features are also quite customizable (e.g. ports monitored by firewall, which applications to connect to internet etc.), but the user needs to approve them at least the first time. Some are obvious (e.g. Do you want to allow Skype to connect to the internet?). Some may be not. The most recent version of Norton takes care of these automatically.
4. Other features: MIS does have a file shredder which is a nice touch. It also claims to have a 'Quick clean' feature to remove unnecessary files (I use the free 'Advanced System Care' which works great; So I didn't need to use MIS' quick clean). Additionally, if you register, you get 1 GB on-line backup storage for your files from McAfee.
Overall, a decent piece of software, not very expensive and while not resource 'light', seems to do its job well.

Scholastic Math Missions
Customer Reviews:
The most helpful favorable review:I really like this game because it makes learning math fun. I say this because after every game, you get 10$ and when you get 150$, you get to start your own arcade! I don't like this game because when you exit, when you come back after exiting it dosen't save your money or level! I think that this product deserves a 4 because it has its ups and downs.
My son is at a 4th grade math level and he loved this game, but beat it completely in less than 4 hours! It would be a great game if they added more content and made it a little more challenging. This is well below a 5th grade level and anyone in the 5th grade would not be challenged at all. My 4th grader wasn't and he is not that strong in math.

We were given the original Reader Rabbit (RR) Preschool a few years ago and wore it out. I thought all kids software was as great; they aren't. I just bought RR's I Can Read with Phonics and, as other early RR versions, the I can Read with Phonics has great, encouraging (non-irratating) voices, sounds, wonderful colors and lots of phonics, words, and sounding out of letters and words alike. My almost-4-year-old has a go at it each day, and my almost-6-year-old loves it and will play it for hours if I let her. I would recommend this product for anyone who has a child who is behind in reading or whom is bored by phonics or fustrated by learning to read; also for anyone trying to learn English as a second language it is great. Or just if you want your child to have an edge with reading. Sit with them while they play, don't just walk away -- tho, even if you do walk away and let them play they are bound to learn, no doubt at all. You'll be suprised how fast they learn. My almost-six-year-old played a few hours a day for three days in a row, then sat down on day four with a pen and paper and declared she wanted to write a story. Wow. If you sit with them and help them sound out the words (tho the computer does that too), you'll be doing something wonderful for your child. RR isn't boring, it can become quite engrossing and fun, even for the helping parent. Nothing is wasted in this program, altho, you follow a map in a car from one level to the next, instead of earning keys to a magical land like in the Preschool RR. So there is a lack of cohesiveness in the I Can Read with Phonics product, but it's miniumal and even forgivable when see how fast they learn and how much they love to play it. It'd call it a painless, fast, learning to read product. Highly Recommened. I also have the JumpStart Phonics CD, but it's not nearly as much fun as the RR I Can Read with Phonics CD.
fter reading many good reviews, I purchased this software for my 4yo who is just starting to read. I am very disappointed in the product.
First, it did not come with installation or use instructions. Installation was pretty standard, so we were able to figure it out. How to use the game, however, was not so standard. We had to figure it out through trial and error. It took perhaps a half hour or so, but having the instructions would have been very helpful.
Second, the software contains books for the child to read, but they are automatically read to the child. There is no way to turn off the feature so the child can read it herself (unless I just have not found the means to do it without the instructions).
Next, there is a character that has a foreign accent. My daughter started to say the words just like that character, like "bed" instead of "bad." I thought this was a really bad idea for children that are learning how to sound out words.
Lastly, I thought the program moved really slowly. The game is set up so that the child has to finish one area before moving on to the next. There is so much animation mixed in with the games that it takes so long to finish one area so you can move on. There is no way to bypass the animation. So it may take 2 seconds for a child to get a question right, but then she has to watch 10-15 seconds of animation before even seeing the next problem. It was interesting for her the first time around, but after that, my daughter was getting bored with seeing the same animation over and over after each problem. This might work for a child that likes to watch TV and hates phonics, but my daughter really wants to learn to read, so this did not work for her at all. I would not recommend this software.
