I've used Panda antivirus software for years and installed it for my friends and clients. As a web designer, I want something to work well yet be unobtrusive. Norton and McAffee get their "code" into everything and it is hard to delete. Zone Alarm did just that everything was an alarm even after telling it not to. Panda works and is easy to install. You do have to delete your previous version of Panda using their uninstall and not Windows uninstall before putting in your new version. Also with the new Global Security 2011 you have to buy a 3 user license instead of a single but now days a lot of people have more than one computer. There are 3 in my household. It is well worth the investment.

Last December I installed the 2010 version of this software and have been happy with it for my parents' computer...on their older Windows XP Professional computer, it's been reliable and unobtrusive, and easy to configure.
Unobtrusive, that is, until it started reminding them to renew their annual subscription to the software. The problem is that the renewal price is pretty high...higher, in fact, than just buying the 2011 version. So, I figured I would get them the 2011 version and install it over the 2010 version. After all, the 2011 version advertises its new features, including increased speed.
So, I sit down with my coffee, ready to start the installation process. A message comes up saying there is no need to install! Just enter the new 2011 license key, and it will extend the 2010 license for another year. In other words, apparently the 2011 version offers nothing new over the 2010 version if you've been keeping the 2010 version up to date. I'm not even two sips into my coffee, and I'm finished "installing".
I like the software. What bugs me is McAfee trying to trick current users into paying too much to renew their software subscription electronically, when the customer could simply order the boxed 2011 version which really amounts to the same update, but at a lower cost.

McAfee Internet Security (MIS 2011)
I tried (McAfee Internet Security) MIS2011 after a long time (It has been ~6 years since I used MaAfee for virus protection) on my WinXP laptop (5 yrs old). MIS2011 is a comprehensive security suite. Its performance (virus detection and internet security) is comparable to Norton. MIS does have room for improvement in a number of areas (esp. resource usage), but still is a decent piece of software.
1. Installation: Installation can be customized from the menu(e.g. deselect spam control, parental control or firewall). Thankfully, installation does not require a restart of your computer, but it does take a while compared to other security software. On my 5yr old laptop, it took ~10 min compared to NIS which took less than 2 min.
2. Performance: MIS also has automatic updates, but installation of signature updates consumes resources even when running in the background. I was able to do minimal tasks such as typing, but browsing got significantly slow during the installation of updates. I haven't had any attacks. So it seems working fine. A system scan didn't reveal threats other than cookies.
3. Internet security: Upon a Google search, the results are marked safe or not with a green tick mark. However, sometimes it just does not show up. In addition, a 'status bar' icon indicates site safety.
MIS automatically detected components of my network (other PCs, router, NAS etc). Everytime I connect to a new wireless network it will pop-up a message and ask me if I want to assign it to a trusted network (e.g. home, work).
Several features are also quite customizable (e.g. ports monitored by firewall, which applications to connect to internet etc.), but the user needs to approve them at least the first time. Some are obvious (e.g. Do you want to allow Skype to connect to the internet?). Some may be not. The most recent version of Norton takes care of these automatically.
4. Other features: MIS does have a file shredder which is a nice touch. It also claims to have a 'Quick clean' feature to remove unnecessary files (I use the free 'Advanced System Care' which works great; So I didn't need to use MIS' quick clean). Additionally, if you register, you get 1 GB on-line backup storage for your files from McAfee.
Overall, a decent piece of software, not very expensive and while not resource 'light', seems to do its job well.

Scholastic Math Missions
Customer Reviews:
The most helpful favorable review:I really like this game because it makes learning math fun. I say this because after every game, you get 10$ and when you get 150$, you get to start your own arcade! I don't like this game because when you exit, when you come back after exiting it dosen't save your money or level! I think that this product deserves a 4 because it has its ups and downs.
My son is at a 4th grade math level and he loved this game, but beat it completely in less than 4 hours! It would be a great game if they added more content and made it a little more challenging. This is well below a 5th grade level and anyone in the 5th grade would not be challenged at all. My 4th grader wasn't and he is not that strong in math.

The most helpful favorable review:
We were given the original Reader Rabbit (RR) Preschool a few years ago and wore it out. I thought all kids software was as great; they aren't. I just bought RR's I Can Read with Phonics and, as other early RR versions, the I can Read with Phonics has great, encouraging (non-irratating) voices, sounds, wonderful colors and lots of phonics, words, and sounding out of letters and words alike. My almost-4-year-old has a go at it each day, and my almost-6-year-old loves it and will play it for hours if I let her. I would recommend this product for anyone who has a child who is behind in reading or whom is bored by phonics or fustrated by learning to read; also for anyone trying to learn English as a second language it is great. Or just if you want your child to have an edge with reading. Sit with them while they play, don't just walk away -- tho, even if you do walk away and let them play they are bound to learn, no doubt at all. You'll be suprised how fast they learn. My almost-six-year-old played a few hours a day for three days in a row, then sat down on day four with a pen and paper and declared she wanted to write a story. Wow. If you sit with them and help them sound out the words (tho the computer does that too), you'll be doing something wonderful for your child. RR isn't boring, it can become quite engrossing and fun, even for the helping parent. Nothing is wasted in this program, altho, you follow a map in a car from one level to the next, instead of earning keys to a magical land like in the Preschool RR. So there is a lack of cohesiveness in the I Can Read with Phonics product, but it's miniumal and even forgivable when see how fast they learn and how much they love to play it. It'd call it a painless, fast, learning to read product. Highly Recommened. I also have the JumpStart Phonics CD, but it's not nearly as much fun as the RR I Can Read with Phonics CD.
fter reading many good reviews, I purchased this software for my 4yo who is just starting to read. I am very disappointed in the product.
First, it did not come with installation or use instructions. Installation was pretty standard, so we were able to figure it out. How to use the game, however, was not so standard. We had to figure it out through trial and error. It took perhaps a half hour or so, but having the instructions would have been very helpful.
Second, the software contains books for the child to read, but they are automatically read to the child. There is no way to turn off the feature so the child can read it herself (unless I just have not found the means to do it without the instructions).
Next, there is a character that has a foreign accent. My daughter started to say the words just like that character, like "bed" instead of "bad." I thought this was a really bad idea for children that are learning how to sound out words.
Lastly, I thought the program moved really slowly. The game is set up so that the child has to finish one area before moving on to the next. There is so much animation mixed in with the games that it takes so long to finish one area so you can move on. There is no way to bypass the animation. So it may take 2 seconds for a child to get a question right, but then she has to watch 10-15 seconds of animation before even seeing the next problem. It was interesting for her the first time around, but after that, my daughter was getting bored with seeing the same animation over and over after each problem. This might work for a child that likes to watch TV and hates phonics, but my daughter really wants to learn to read, so this did not work for her at all. I would not recommend this software.

Norton 360 Version 4.0 1 User/3 PC [Download]
The most helpful favorable review:
I have been using Norton for 7 years and after having tried many other Anti-Virus solutions it is easy to say Norton is always the most reliable and hassle free.
A few of the product comments here make this down-loadable version of Norton 360 sound hard to use, and that is just not the case.
Getting this download version saved me $15 over having the boxed version shipped, not to mention it was instant.
I had protection going 5 minutes after my order.
Now I did already have a trial version of Norton 360 installed that I had downloaded directly from the Norton site. I just choose to purchase from Amazon after my trial version expired for 2 reasons.
#1 I love Amazon.
#2 The price at Amazon was way better than buying direct from the software vendors own website.
I just purchased 360 here and used the license key Amazon gave me to activate my expired 30 day trial version.
Even if I had not had the trial version already installed, purchasing and downloading this software from Amazon is not complicated at all, as some of the other reviewers would make you believe.
Yes you do have to install the Amazon down-loader software. So what, it was super simple, and you can always uninstall it later if you wish.
Once you install the down-loader which takes all of 30 seconds, you then download the Norton 360 software.
You can then choose to install Norton 360 right from the downloader, however a backup copy of Norton 360 is added into a folder on your PC. On my windows 7 machine this location was at:
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Amazon Games & Software
It is named N360-ESD-17-6-0-32-EN.exe so if you can not find the folder just search for that on your PC. You can then easily burn that to a CD so you can install the software on 3 separate computers.
Optionally you could also just transfer the .exe file over your network to your other 2 machines if you have a network setup in your home or office.
I added screen shots of the down-loader and the path within amazon to access your license key after your purchase in the images at the top of this products page.
After your order simply go to your Amazon account to get your product key. Just use the "Your Account" link and then under "Digital Content" select the link titled "Your Games and Software Library". Look for the orange "Your product key" button to access your license key.
Super easy, and super fast! This is a great deal compared to having the product shipped in a Box on CD that you will just end up throwing away after your install anyway!
Go Green and purchase this downloaded version of Norton 360!

My Norton 360 subscription was about to expire. Norton wanted $70 for the renewal, so of course I opted for Amazon. I uninstalled my original software, rebooted, and installed the new one I'd just bought from Amazon. Everything worked great (at least on the Amazon end), but the Norton screen told me that I had one day left on my subscription. In other words, it didn't recognize the new installation/subscription.
I went looking for online help and wound up with a customer service rep in India. I explained the situation several times, but he kept telling me that I had to renew my subscription. Then he offered me 30 free days - after which I'd have to pay to renew the subscription. BUT I JUST PAID FOR A NEW ONE, I yelled. Finally - after an hour - he asked for the product key Amazon had given me, and entering that in the renewal window took care of the issue.
I'm leaving out a lot of excruciating detail.
SO BEWARE: If you're already a subscriber and you're taking advantage of Amazon's highly favorable pricing, keep the product key ready. You'll surely need it.

I purchased this for 3 computers and loaded it into all 3 computers, a Windows 7 system, a Windows XP system and a Windows Vista system. It almost functioned in the Windows Vista system, except that it locked up several software programs that we tried running after loading the software. The Windows 7 system produced nothing but errors when trying to run it. Panda Internet Security 2011 3-UserThe XP system locked up entirely. I had to boot up the computer in safe mode just to uninstall this software.
My conclusion is that this software is equivalent to intentionally paying for and loading a virus into your computer.
Do Not Buy this piece of ****ware if you can even call it that.

As a consultant to small business I have promoted Quick books for the past 14 years.
Overall the software is excellent and it does an excellent job of tracking your business finances.
The original cost of the program is very inexpensive, even if you upgrade every year you will spend less then $200/year.( I recommend upgrading every 2nd or 3rd year )
Even though Intuit charges extra for Add On services (such as support, payroll, off site backup, etc) these are still reasonable priced for the service you get. In the end you should only be paying for the services you need. ( While there are cheaper alternatives for many of Intuit's services, in some cases it may be worthwhile to do it all through Intuit.)
BUT............
be very careful when dealing with Intuit.
Today I tried to reorder checks. It took almost 30min on the phone, and in the end the sales rep signed me up for 2 additional services that I had specifically told him I wasn't interest in.
It took me over an hour to cancel those services. (3 phone calls)
I continually have problems when dealing with Intuit's customer support(not Tech support). While eventually they correct the problems, it always seams to take a while. I usually do something like clean out my email while I am waiting on hold to be transferred to the person that can fix the problem.
When dealing with Intuit always double check your order, and double check what intuit is charging you.
I recently found that Intuit had been charging a client for 2 payroll subscriptions each year(Even though they were both for the same tax ID number and one subscription hadn't had any activity for 3 years).
Be patience and very clear on the phone. The will continually try to up sell you services.
Also I would not recommended that you buy any supplies from Intuit, they are expensive and the pressure to add on services is very annoying.
The most helpful critical review:
The latest version of QB has now completely taken away your ability to attach documents you've stored on your own computer. Instead, you have to pay for their "service" (something always subject to the whims of the powers that be at Intuit) and pay for their Document Attachment Service (starting at $9.95/month for one attachment per item). Oh, you can still host the stuff on your servers, it's just that QB's charges you to actually access it. There are 3rd party software programs that will do the same thing, but they run around $200 a piece.
Manual payroll is still available- but I guarantee you will spend a couple of hours looking for the RIGHT set of instructions to set it up. Even the tech support didn't know how to do it in this version.
There are still compatability issues with Windows 7 64 bit. I ended up with the blue screen of death for a while. Program shuts down unexpectedly.
The ads for the paid services are intrusive and nearly impossible to avoid. The planned obselence of 3 years (you won't be able to download your bank/credit card items any more) is another form of Intuit's greed mentality. All in all, it's time to start migrating away from QB. And that's a shame, since I've used it successfully for nearly a decade.

Microsoft Office 2010 Home & Student (Disc Version)
Customer Reviews:
The most helpful favorable review:
I've had an opportunity to use Office 2010 Beta edition for a couple of months now and now that I see the full, final, edition I can say that this is a very worthwhile upgrade. First things first, I am not a techie. I am someone who uses Word, Excel and PowerPoint on a very regular basis, who really liked some of the changes in Office 2007 but who thought some things needed tweaking, so when given the opportunity for the beta edition I jumped on it and have not been disappointed. Office 2010 is to Office 2007 what Windows 7 was to Vista; that is, there are not many breakthrough, drastically different features, but a whole lot of polishing and cleanup to make it easier and more efficient. Overall, the program seems to run faster, incorporates many of the most commonly used options and makes them more accessible (eliminating many dialog boxes and tabs) and allows for more customization.
At first glance it looks very much like its predecessor, the ribbon is back and it is now also found on OneNote. There are plenty of sites that will give you a play-by-play on all the features available in this new version, so I'm just going to mention some of the biggest improvements that I've seen.
1) The biggest change is the addition of the web apps. It may not be a true direct competitor to google docs, but it allows for easier sharing of documents, as well as making your documents more accessible.
2) The ribbon is back and it now includes the "File" option and a new feature called "Backstage view." Backstage view incorporates the most commonly used actions in one place (yay! no more dialog boxes with tabs). You get the usual open, save and print, but you also get several templates for new documents, print layouts and ways to share your work, all without dialog boxes and tabs, everything is much more easily accessible.
3) Another new feature is that the ribbon is now customizable so you can organize it according to your needs.
4) There is a Paste Preview which lets you switch between paste options so you can make sure that your work will be formatted correctly.
Changes in PowerPoint.
You can now edit video directly on PowerPoint. You can trim a video, add effects, fades and even triggers for animations for the presentation. Another new feature is that you can add effects and edit images without the need for third party software.
Changes in Word.
One nifty new feature in Word is called "Navigation pane," which replaces the old document map. It incorporates minor changes in design that make big changes in productivity and ease of use. It allows you to quickly rearrange the document. Take for example a document with several headings/sections. The Navigation pane provides a list of all the headings. The headings are live, so you can drag them up or down, thus rearranging the document. It also incorporates most of the functions that used to be available in the "Find" dialog box but now they are all visible so you don't have to go digging through several menus to find the option that you need.
Changes in Excel.
Most of the changes in Excel deal with very large datasets. There is a new PowerPivot add-in which works great if you are dealing with a very large dataset that does not fit in one Excel spreadsheet. PowerPivot pulls the data from multiple sources (several Excel spreadsheets for instance) to analyze it.
Summary:
Overall this is one well planned and executed upgrade that essentially takes all the promises of Office 2007 and makes them a reality. Yes, some things are different, and it will take some getting used to; but, once you realize the improvement in efficiency you'll agree that the changes are mostly for the positive. The only thing that I truly wish had changed but didn't is that this version does not include Outlook. That is available in the Home and Business version.
The most helpful critical review:
In my title, I noted that it is "probably" not worth the upgrade. The probably depends upon what you are upgrading from. If you are using Office 2007, stick with 2007. This has a slightly longer load time and not much in the way of usable new features. If you are upgrading from an even earlier version of Office, then this is probably the way to go.
The good: The ribbon bar. I like it and it is still there, with a couple of minor improvements such as adding a file option and incorporating your most commonly used actions into one place (kind of like Office 2003 did). The look is slightly updated to be more in line with Windows 7. There are some nice video editing features for PowerPoint that you may find useful. Also, the true claim to fame of this program is that it nearly catches up to Google Docs with online options. Finally, this is a three computer license, which is nice since so many people buy one and put it on all the computers in the house anyway.
The bad: Slower load time (with a fancier splash screen to make you think you are getting something better). Second, try the online options at Office Live before you buy. I have found that the load times can be unbearable there and the firewall where I work effectively blocks the Office Live features anyway.
The INEXCUSABLE: I didn't want to give this a one star rating for draconian DRM like so many gamers have done lately, but this product does one inexcusable thing on install. I was "upgrading" from Office 2007 Pro to 2010 Home and Student. I was well aware that this version didnt come with Access or Outlook, but I WAS COMPLETELY UNAWARE THAT 2010 WOULD REMOVE MY EXISTING ACCESS 2007 AND OUTLOOK 2007 FROM MY COMPUTER WITHOUT MY PERMISSION! There is no excuse for this type of behavior and it is making me consider re-installing 2007 instead of this junk! (When I have time, I will attempt to re-install Outlook and Access 2007 from that disk and see what happens, but even if that works, this is inexcusable.)

I've used H&R Block's tax software every year since 2004. Always some annoyances, but most of it is excellent.
Price Dips: Below 25 buckss. Sometimes below 20. It went to 22.49 on Jan 12, 2011, for example. Amazon has always had the best price. There's an "Online Price Alert" that will email you whenever this or any amazon product dips below your target price. Google it. It's nicely done.
The Download Version is often a few dollars less.
Unlimited number of tax returns: (family members, what-if copies of your return, etc.) I think TurboTax also lets you do this now, but in the past TurboTax pulled some real nasty tricks with licensing/copy protection, and they continue to charge 18-45% more than H&R Block.
It includes unlimited paper filings for one state ($ 19.95 extra per state e-file). So, I just file state returns on paper.
"Free" tax softwares like TaxAct might be the thing if your return is very simple, but their better versions are almost as expensive as H&R Block at low tide, and not as good.
So far, the 2010 version is just like 2009. (I did a side-by-side run-through.)
Typical minor annoyances: (all carry-overs from 2009)
- Upgrade pitches: They weave it into the interview and make it sound as if "an upgrade to Premium is advised for your situation" even when it makes little or no sense for your situation. Sleazy.
- Unclear wording in a few places, although most wording is very clear and accurate.
- Privacy Policy: During install, you can hit a "View Privacy Policy" button, which as of Dec 8, 2010 does not work. Or go to a 37-character url (must hand type it...no copy-paste). You can then view their "Privacy Notice" or their equally obscure "Online Privacy Practices and Principles." Both have a reassuring tone while offering rather little privacy protection from marketing partners but your information will be used "in accordance with law."
- Copy...Paste from Interview screens. That would be handy at times. No can do. Can't print them either. Only way I found is ALT + PrintScreen, then paste the graphic into Word or a paint program.
Critical reviews:
I have been using "Taxcut" (as it has always been called since last year) for over 10 years now. I have never had any problems with it, so I thought. I just recently discovered it is missing Form 8891 (for Canadians living in the US with an RRSP). This form is not provided in the software and there is no prompt that you should file this *required* form. (TurboTax, on the other hand, does provide this form.)
I posted a question about this in the H&R Block forum, and my question was deleted immediately. I did receive an email from H & R Block which basically said they were sorry for the inconvenience and I could request a refund if purchased within 60 days. I wondered why I could find no info on this matter in their online support forum. Since they deleted my post, perhaps they have deleted similar posts as well? And it makes you wonder what else is missing, not just from their forum, but more importantly, from their software. Very disappointed.

I am using Turbotax for several year now, and it makes the otherwise unpleasant task of tax preparation quite easy and accurate. The first time I used it, 4 years ago I still had a large accouning firm do my taxes - for approx. $1000 per year, - out of curiosity I tried doing same return with Turbotax which then said I owed considerably less taxes. It turned out that Turbotax was right, the accountants forgot some deductions. Eversince I use only Turbotax and do my own taxes.

As other people have noted, this version of the software does not work with all version of Windows 7. Tech support was unable to resolve. I have a broken and uninstallable product. Have used TurboTax for years and love it. Going to have to use a different product.

Customer Review:
Is Apple's latest operating system, Snow Leopard, a strong, reliable OS that demonstrates the versatility of Macs? Yes
That being said, is Snow Leopard an essential upgrade? No, not exactly.
THE DIFFERENCE IS NOT THAT DRASTIC
The differences between Apple's "Tiger" OS (10.4) and "Leopard" (10.5) were very noticeable, and there were many improvements that made the upgrade worthwhile. Such as Time Machine, Boot Camp, Quick Look, and many more The bulk of changes between Leopard (10.5) and this latest release, "Snow Leopard" (10.6), are "under the hood" so to speak, and therefore the average user might not notice as much of a change as they'd expect with an OS upgrade. But then again, why fix a bone that's not broken? Leopard was a success, and Snow Leopard improves on it, without radically altering the user experience. The majority of improvements affect system reliability, speed, and resourcefulness. There is also Microsoft Exchange support, which is great for those who need it.
EXPECTATIONS
I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade knowing full well it wasn't going to be a drastically different OS, so I was by no means disappointed. I've been following the tech news regarding Mac and Windows operating system upgrades very closely, and am well aware that August's release of Apple's Snow Leopard and October's release of Microsoft's
Windows 7 are meant to provide additional stability and implement greater resourcefulness, rather than completely overhaul the user experience. This isn't a bad thing, since greater system reliability is more important than adding bells and whistles that ultimately take away from the user experience (i.e. Vista).
EXPERIENCE
I have only installed it on only one computer so far (running on an Intel chip and 4GB of RAM), but installation was a breeze, and Snow Leopard has been running smoothly so far. I previously strongly disliked `Preview' and `Quicktime' since they were so slow (I preferred freeware `Xee' and `VLC Media Player'). With Snow Leopard, loading times have noticeably improved for both Preview and Quicktime. I haven't yet noticed other improvements in speed, but that might be because my computer was already fast to begin with (4GB is great!).
Additionally, while I personally upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, it is nice to know that even if you weren't using OS 10.5 (Leopard) and were still on OS 10.4 (Tiger), you can upgrade directly to OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
LAST THOUGHTS
I didn't have issues with Leopard, so I don't think Snow Leopard was to me as essential an upgrade as Windows 7 will be to Windows Vista. That being said, Snow Leopard is a very strong and reliable OS, so I don't regret my purchase. The low price makes this an affordable upgrade solution, but due to the lack of drastic changes between Snow Leopard and its predecessor, one that isn't absolutely necessary.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 3-User
5.0 out of 5 stars The best security package I have ever used
Kaspersky replaced McAfee on my computer, low resource utilization and no problems. Easy installation.
Not only can I use my computer at any time, I can also print on my wireless connected printer. McAfee decided that since I did not have their product installed on the "computer" on my home network I could not use it. To print I had to disable the firewall. Kaspersky correctly identifies the device as a printer and have no problems using all of the features of my all-in-one.
The installation was flawless and fast, even though there was a new version available and the download was large.
Full system scan runs very quietly on the background and I don't even notice it is doing anything, I had to open the window to see if it was still doing it or it was completed. It also ran in half the time of what McAfee used to take, and you do notice McAfee when it is running.
Another advantage is that it has not used up another license because I am running a multi-core processor, McAfee had me at five licenses because of this problem. My computer is set-up as a single user computer.
I have not contacted support for anything, so I can't rate it.
I have not found any of the problems reported in other reviews for 64-bit based systems with multi-core processor (Intel i7 X980) and Windows 7 ultimate, every program performs flawlesly and starts faster than they were starting before I switched to Kaspersky.

This is the best product of its class that I've found. The interface is not just simple to use, it is actually fun to use. The interface is very efficient and easy to maneuver around. It is extremely powerful in the sense that you can really get "under the hood" and mess around with the system, but it is also relatively safe - it is easy to back out and restore things if you overdo it and delete some component or capability of your system inadvertantly.
The only thing I had that was sort of a negative was a problem registering the trial version of the software. I received the free version on line with the option to upgrade to the paid version. When the time came, I decided to pay on line but the company apparently had issues with my physical address (I'm in Iraq with the Army) not matching my billing address. I ended up having to come to Amazon to buy the software. (I should have just been able to do it on-line.) No big deal in the long-run. I wanted the physical disks anyway and the price was the same.
